Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are based on the principle that both the brain and the mind are divided into two distinct parts. The left side of the brain, associated with the conscious mind, is responsible for logical thinking, analysis and action. The right side of the brain, associated with the subconscious (or unconscious) mind, is home to our emotions, imagination, values and habits.

The conscious and subconscious minds work together hand in hand. Learning, for example, occurs when the conscious mind encounters, analyzes and eventually accepts a new idea. Once accepted as true, this information then filters into the subconscious mind where it takes root—becoming, in turn, a force that influences the thoughts and actions our conscious mind controls. The subconscious mind is, literally, the brains behind the operation, home to a vast reservoir of information that influences everything we think and do.

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention. Rather than an esoteric phenomenon that occurs only under special circumstances, it is a state that each of us experiences every day. Daydreaming, being absorbed in a book or movie, driving on "auto pilot" and drifting off to sleep are all examples of ordinary hypnotic states. Therapeutic hypnosis (hypnotherapy) is achieved by trained professionals who use special relaxation and visualization techniques. Can you be hypnotized? Yes. In fact, you've already experienced it.

Hypnosis occurs when the conscious mind relaxes, allowing the subconscious mind with its rich storehouse of memories, instincts and emotions to surface. Such a shift may occur on its own, or it may be prompted by techniques designed to put the normally guarded conscious mind at rest. Despite the deep relaxation of our conscious mind, we remain in control—always maintaining free will and the ability to uphold our morals and ethics. Learn more about hypnosis and safety.

During hypnosis, we are temporarily released from the domain of reasoning and analysis. As a result, creativity expands and we are allowed to explore powerful regions of the mind that normally remain hidden. By communicating with the subconscious, we are able to directly alter the attitudes and beliefs that govern our approach to living.

Hypnotherapy is the skilled use of hypnosis to beneficially change the core beliefs and attitudes that govern our lives. How can it help you? Using hypnotherapy to achieve your health and wellness goals is like gardening. It allows you to access the fertile soil of your subconscious mind, where you may weed out old habits and attitudes, planting healthier ones in their place. With time and attention, these seeds put down roots and eventually bloom above surface of the soil, within the conscious mind—and your life.

Hypnotherapy has been proven successful in resolving a number of issues including weight loss, smoking, stress and anxiety. It is also a popular method for facilitating a comfortable childbirth and managing diseases such as diabetes.
